Abstract

This work presents FPGA implementation of Direct Torque Control (DTC) for Surface Mounted Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (SPM) using fuzzy logic controller. Using VHDL, the Direct Torque Control algorithm with fuzzy controller is designed and implemented on a Xilinx Spartan-3 FPGA board. The important characteristic of a DTC is its precise control and quick response. Three sets of DTC space vectors are considered for analysis purpose and the performance of the three control schemes are evaluated in terms of torque ripple, flux ripple and transient response to step variations in torque and speed control commands. By choosing proper membership functions and rule base in FLC an accurate voltage space vector with a smaller hysteresis band is possible, which reduces torque and flux ripples to a great extent. Experimental results with FPGA for transient response of the drive using fuzzy logic controller are implemented for step changes in speed and load torques
