Abstract

This paper presents a particle swarm optimization efficient algorithm (PSO) for the solution of the optimal power flow (OPF). The objective is to minimize the total fuel cost of generating units with optimal setting of control variables without violating inequality constraints and satisfying equality constraint. Control variables are both continuous and discrete. The continuous control variables are unit active power outputs and generator bus voltage magnitudes, while the discrete variables are transformer tap settings and reactive power of shunt compensators. The PSO algorithm solution has been tested on the standard IEEE 30-Bus test system with different cases of objective function such as simple quadratic fuel cost, simple fuel cost with voltage profile improvement with both continuous and discrete control variables. The results have been compared to other methods
