This paper incorporates two FACTS devices such as SVC and STATCOM in optimal power flow solutions to enhance the performance of the power systems. The particle swarm optimization (PSO) is used for solving the optimal power flow problem for steady-state studies by maintaining thermal and voltage constraints. The effectiveness of the proposed approach has been examined and tested on the standard IEEE 14-bus test system with shunt FACTS devices. Results show that the proposed algorithm gives better solutions to enhance the system performance with STATCOM compared to SVC.
