Title:”Handbook of Electric Motors”-second edition,
revised and expanded.
Editors: H.A. Toliyat, G.B. Kliman
Publisher: Marcel Dekker Inc.,
This new edition of “Handbook of Electric Motors”, with new editors, and numerous revisions, represents probably the most comprehensive such work dedicated so far to electric motors.
The very good expertise of its numerous contributing authors secures high quality treatment of various type of electric motors from their configurations, through their performance, design, control, maintenance, protection and environmental influence.
The editors’ broad experience in the field is visible in the organization of the material, selection of revisions and in the effort to secure a unitary style in presentation.
The handbook is structured in 15 chapters. Principles of energy conversion, types of motors and their characteristics(138pp), synchronous motor analysis and design(29pp),, motor selection(48pp), induction motor analysis and design(83pp),direct-current motor analysis and design(38pp), testing for performance(40pp), motor insulation systems(14pp), motor control(50pp), motor protection(31pp), mechanical considerations(68pp), environmental considerations(37pp), reliability(36pp),, maintenance(35pp), electronic motors(42pp) are all dedicated individual chapters.
The wide spectrum of electric motor configurations and their performance control, design and testing approaches covered by the handbook has forced the editors to make painful decisions in terms of the amount of spaced dedicated to various subjects.
But all in the entire book cover most if not all aspects of electric motors, both standard and new.
We noticed with satisfaction the thorough treatment types of motors and their characteristics(Chapter 2) of induction machine analysis and design(Chapter 4) , the mechanical considerations(Chapter 11) and of the electronic motors(Chapter15).
The handbook theoretical level is high in some chapter and acceptable in other according to the subject.
As with any very good book there may be suggestions for a third edition such as: a more thorough analysis and design of synchronous machines, a separate analysis and design of PM electric motors, a single chapter on motor control as all electric motors may be controlled through power electronics though some of them can not work at all without it.
Also, reference to recent and essential books is the field of electric motors should be better observed in various chapters.
Finally, I would like to warmly recommend the “Handbook of Electric Motors” to all electrical and mechanical engineers from industry, which deals with electric motors and to graduate students and faculty in the field.
